I think I have to disagree. I saw the Dead there in the fall of 76 and it definitely was the Auditorium. A gorgeous art-deco place - sort of like the SF Paramount on steroids. The second show was a serious mind blower, but the cops were really oppressive about the evil weed.

Could the boys have played the Exposition Hall in the 60's and then worked their way up to being classy by '76?

You are correct...

Deadbase lists:

11/10-11/67 - Shrine Exhibition Hall

10/14-15/76 - Shrine Auditorium

Makes sense; all I knew was a lot of bands played the SEHall in the late 60s, or at least that was the name everyone used when talking about shows they saw there...I think I'd even seen ticket stubs at one point and it stuck in my mind because it always made me think of "shriners".
